Jesolo Paese

Jesolo paese is an integral part of Jesolo. It does not directly overlook the sea like Lido di Jesolo, but has developed more inland. Bathed by the river Sile, also called the Vecchio Piave for that stretch, it stretches as far as Cortellazzo. It is a hamlet where the dimension of the small provincial town is fully revived. A central square with a fountain overlooked by a number of cafés and ice-cream parlours with their own tables and chairs where you can linger with friends, a church dedicated to St John, a wine shop where you can savour the absolute best of local food and wine products with a choice of excellent wines, a number of hotels and flats where you can stay not far from the beach to experience a holiday where the crowds of the coastline are experienced only if you want to.

Historical notes and monuments

Jesolo town was a strategic place of great importance during the First and Second World Wars. Particularly during the Great War, when the Piave River became a key military battle line. Two small Italian machine gun bunkers from the 1915/18 war are preserved as monuments. One is located in Jesolo Paese, in Via Antiche Mura (adjacent to a school building), the other in Cortellazzo, near the bridge over the Cavetta canal.
More numerous are the testimonies of the 1940/45 period. In Jesolo town I can report the presence of at least three bunkers of German construction. The first is at the end of Via Antiche Mura, inside the archaeological complex of the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Equilio1. The second is located at the end of Via XXIV Maggio, not far from the cemetery. The last one is located along Via Cristoforo Colombo, protecting the Cavetta canal, and the upper part is currently used as a terrace.
